Tarapith Temple is a famous Hindu temple. It is situated in Tarapith town of Birbhum district, west Bengal. The deity is in the form of fearsome Hindu Divine Mother and this temple is one among 51 Shakthi Peeth.
In this temple there are two Tara images. The idol is in the form of mother suckling Lord Shiva (primordial image). It represents Tara in her fiery form with four arms, wearing a garland of skulls and a protruding tongue.The forehead of the metal image is adorned with red kumkum (vermilion). Priests take this Kumkum and apply it on the devotees forehead this represents the Tara’s blessings. The devotees offers coconuts, bananas and also provides the bottle of whiskey.
Before entering into the temple the devotees take a holy bath in the sacred tank. The water of this tank restore life to the dead.
Devotees offers the goat to the deity. They bath the goats in the holy tank and cut the head of the goat. Then collect the blood in the vessels and offers to the deity. The devotees also cut their forehead with a bit of blood from the pit, as a mark of reverence to the deity.
According to the history, Daksha who is the father of Goddess Sati insulted the lord Shiva and Shri Sati. He did not invite them to Daksha Yoga. Goddess Sati did not get the permission from lord Shiva and went to the Daksha Yoga. Her father insulted a lot. so goddess Sati sacrificed herself in the Yogna. On hearing this, lord Shiva got angry and he started to dance for destroyed this universe. To prevent this, lord Vishnu Sliced the body with his Chakra. It was placed in 51 different parts of the world. That is known as 51 Shakti peethas.
In this temple goddess sati’s Upper lips was placed and worshiped as Phullara
